  4. Another thing I would say you need to be aware of is lack of basic human interaction. Some people thrive but for others it sneaks up on them and they find themselves in a rut. You have to make sure to get out of the house.

    1. Your point is well taken, as interaction with others is important. Each person needs some, but the amount of interaction wanted or needed depends upon the individual. Perhaps, it all comes down to just being able to control when you get it.

  5. You know that was a pretty balanced post. Often we hear about the advantages but seldom are we told about what is hard about this type of work. Good job!

  6. I’ve been really dong research on Work From Home jobs and this is the only post that I’ve seen to give very detailed pros and cons about it. In my opinion I believe the pro’s outweigh the con’s. Yes I might get a little lonely working by myself, but I think working from home will help me be a little more productive with my work and home life. Thank you for this great post!

    1. Thank you for your observations and comments on this subject. It is important to weigh all of the factors that might help or hurt your results. One way to think about the decision could be to just ask yourself seriously, “Where will I more likely achieve my most important goals and how can I be the most effective at doing so?” Each person is unique in many ways. In our opinion, the key is realizing that because you are unique, your solution does not have to agree with what everybody else is doing. One size does not fit all.

  7. Thanks for highlighting pros and cons of working from home. It has been three months since I have started working from home and I am enjoying every bit of it particularly the flexible schedule. I will admit, though, I do need to improve on my self-discipline to get more done working from home.

    1. We are pleased that you are making progress. In your situation as with most of our subscribers who are beginning to work from home, distractions are often the first obstacle to overcome. We are sure that you will continue to make progress if you focus on all of the important reasons why you wanted to work from home.

  8. I agree that working from home definitely has its advantages and disadvantages. As a stay-at-home Mom, I love being able to work from home but it can be challenging with little kids in the house.

    1. Yes, this is true. We often are told about distractions while working at home that one would not have if working from an office. Naturally, either way, there are pros and cons. The key is that it is part of the process to develop methods that will allow you to accomplish what you need to do to be successful.

  9. These are some really good points. This article listed some points I never thought of before. I love interacting with my co-workers and being praised for working hard. If I were to switch to working from home that would not be happening. Maintaining self-motivation is very important, and in my case would be difficult if I was to work from home. This article is extremely helpful in deciding to work from home or not.

    1. Thank you for your comments, Sky. We believe that it is important to understand which situation is best for you. Sometimes, the “grass seems greener” when if really isn’t. There really is no fair way to judge what circumstances are best for someone else, but we can share our experiences with each other. You understand what motivates you and certainly that is important to know.

  10. I personally could never work at home where there is a TV. Whenever I have the chance to work at home I usually end up going to a library because there are no distractions.

    1. Thanks for your insight, Matt. It is certainly not uncommon to have to deal with distractions while working from home. Your approach is a very wise one indeed. By isolating yourself from those distractions, you dramatically increase your chances to be successful with your efforts.

  11. I don’t think that the disadvantages of working from home that you mentioned as disadvantages.
Every morning there will be a strong temptation to “sleep in”
This is not a strong argument. If you are working from home, then you set your own hours. How do you define what sleeping in is?
Only YOU will tell you what to do throughout the day.
This is an advantage. Most work at home jobs are for business owners. You are your own boss.
There is no co-workers to talk with throughout the day
This is a distraction anyway and could be viewed as an advantage.
You will have to eat lunch alone, unless you leave the house
This is a disadvantage only if you value company while you eat.
You won’t be able to get away from work by going home
I handle this by going out to the movies, sports events, hanging with friends, etc. Work is a mindset as well as a place. It’s up o the individual to decide where that happens.
Your workspace should to be separate from your living space
    why? Invalid
If you want to daily interface with co-workers, it may be difficult
email, skype, facetime, a phone call, etc enough said.
You can’t impress anyone whenever you are working hard
who cares? The money that you make should be enough reward.
There can be time warps. You can under work or over work
I’ll agree that under working could be a disadvantage, but overworking just means that you make more money.

    1. Rich, you certainly have thought about this subject in some detail. In reality, everything is relative to a person’s viewpoint. The work that has to be accomplished is likely to be very much the same whether it is performed at home or in an off-site office. The important thing is whether the work is completed on time, efficiently and effectively. If one can assure that this goal is reached while also enjoying the benefits of working from home, we feel that “the mission is accomplished”. To us, it is just as simple as that.

  12. i find this article very relevant to me. in the past ive tried working from home, i worked for about 3 months and stopped as you said it needs lots of effort even more than from working at a office. keeping in mind it doesnt give you the same experience as working at your company.

    1. We understand. Every person responds to their environment in their own way. For some, the office environment brings out their best efforts and results, while for others, working from home would be best. In many situations, the type of work being done has to be considered also. Unfortunately, for the most part, when you are working for someone else, you are forced to go with their rules whether their rules are in your best interest or not. That is one of the difficulties of working for someone else. As we are sure you know, there are pros and cons on this subject. No matter what point of view a person has, it will always be true that what works well for one person is likely not to be a perfect solution for someone else.
